Arenal
Volcano, one of the most active in the world, is located about
20 miles north of
Villa del Rio. Guided tours are available from the nearby town of
La Fortuna. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, white water rafting
and lounging in
the several hot springs are some of the activities available in the
area.
A two hour private hike from Villa del Rio through the rainforest led by a young English speaking neighbor brings you to a beautiful waterfall rarely seen by visitors. On the way, you may observe tropical birds, butterflies, iguanas, monkeys and other forest animals.

| Villa del Rio lies four kilometers from
the pavement, at the end of a bumpy country road and at the beginning
of the Cordillera Mountains rainforest. Sitting in the Lodge, looking into
the rain forest, you see the Chichagua River tumbling over huge boulders
toward you. The Lodge is on the right and on the left is the Guesthouse
connected to the Lodge by a covered, raised walkway. To the right, obscured
mostly by trees, are two bedrooms, second floor and ground level, both
overlooking the river. The Lodge is open to the air like a covered patio
while the bedrooms have doors and screened windows for privacy. The architectural
design is
the work of Erik Frost of Jacksonport, Wisconsin, USA.
Villa del Rio will accommodate seven
adults in two lovely bedrooms and one unique guesthouse, attached to
the Lodge by a 30 meter raised and covered walkway. There is a fully
equipped kitchen. The unobstructed,
panoramic view of the river and rain forest from the lodge,
guesthouse
and bedrooms offers a dramatic but peaceful situation with maximum privacy
